Day 69: Second Zero in Mammoth

June 16th, 2022 by Jon

We didn’t do a lot today. We woke up and headed over to Mammoth Coffee Roasting Company, which had great coffee, donuts, and breakfast sandwiches. Singsong and I each got a bagel with lox and a donut. We headed over to Vons afterward to finish grabbing food for the next section. We plan to carry out about 6 days of food, but not many lunch items, so we can just top off at the Tuolomne Meadows store in 45 miles and then have another 75 miles from there to Northern Kennedy Meadows, where we will finally be able to get rid of these bear cans. Woohoo!

We made it back to the condo by 11:00 or so and didn’t do much else all day besides marinate some meat for dinner. Around 4:00, I got a haircut from Bouge because I really needed it, and we used kitchen scissors and a $7 electric razor that Classic and Spigot had. They use a bounce box to mail themselves stuff they don’t want to carry from town to town and keep it in there. She did an amazing job, and I’m feeling a lot lighter on top of my head now.

We BBQ’ed the meat and made Bulgogi, a Korean dish that Singsong’s family makes often. We had rice and sautéed veggies, and after dinner we all lay around on the couch for a while digesting. Biscuit, Flamingo, Classic, Spigot, and I all went hot tubbing and sat in the sauna that evening before we watched a few more episodes of Under the Banner of Heaven. We stayed up until 11:30 watching it, and have the finale to finish in the next town. We can’t wait.

Tomorrow we head back to trail. We plan to get up, grab some breakfast, and catch the free trolley back to the trailhead. It’s been a really great double zero, and our bodies needed it. Soon we will be in Yosemite National Park, and we will hit 1,000 miles next week, so there is a lot to look forward to.
